What is Lights Up?
Lights Up is a new company born from two kinds of kismet: the reconnection of two theater people who bonded over their love of The Fantasticks – and the discovery of the perfect venue for that play in Pioneer Square’s historic underground. Our goal is to produce dramatic work which brings people together and works against the divisiveness of the current political climate. Is there a better play to fit that bill than this one? We don’t think so.

Margie Slovan
Artistic Director
Margie Slovan is a writer, director, journalist and teaching artist in Seattle. It sounds kind of crazy, but Margie regards all of these careers simply as different vehicles for telling a story. The Fantasticks is a story she’s always wanted to tell, and it was time. So she and Alberto launched Lights Up in January and started pre-production for The Fantasticks at the same time. How is she coping? This photo is all you need to know.

Mark Rabe
Music Director
Having nearly completed his fourth decade working professionally in the theatre, as an actor, singer, pianist, vocal coach, music director, and solo cabaret artist, Mark is a thoroughly domesticated indoor creature, primarily nocturnal, who occasionally ventures out into the wild during daylight hours. For Mark, this production is sort of a homecoming, because The Fantasticks was the very first musical score he ever played in performance.

Carol Sage-Silverstein
Producer
Growing up, Carol’s father encouraged her to learn “a little bit about a lot of things,” and she took that advice to heart. From acting to business and back again, her life has been shaped by curiosity, opportunity, and unexpected turns. That may be one reason she feels so connected to The Fantasticks — a story about love, longing, choices, and the decisions that quietly change the course of our lives. Carol hopes that you'll laugh, maybe shed a tear or two, and leave the theatre imagining a time when life moved a little slower — and felt just a bit more magical.

Alberto Lacao, Jr.
Producer
Alberto is a natural born administrator both in and out of the arts (sounds boring to some, but even left brained activities need creativity too!). Utilizing these skills in film, he has worked as a producer, production manager, production coordinator, assistant director, and script supervisor in various productions. He is bringing his own form of creativity to help bring The Fantasticks to life!

Jay Sharma
The IT Guy
Jay is a highly focused technical director who also loves working in IT. He balances both in his day-to-day life by managing systems for his business clients and coming up with solutions for theatrical productions. You can often find him sitting at a computer looking slightly stressed while typing feverishly.

Tova Steele
Web Designer
Tova is a longtime theater kid, only child of Madame Artistic Director and decidedly, not a web designer. Based in New Orleans, she is passionate about directing operations and managing stages. Feel free to donate the cost of a dirty gin martini in her honor (in Seattle, she hears that’s at least $30…)

We are proud to partner with the historic New Skid Road Theatre - a flexible, versatile space available to small arts organizations and individuals for evening rentals at artist-friendly rates in the heart of Pioneer Square,
From the early 1970’s until the mid-1980’s, this spot at 102 Cherry Street was where the Skid Road Theatre company produced original groundbreaking plays and musical classics, and where local legends honed their theatrical chops. That was a time in Seattle theatre when affordable space was abundant, which allowed artists to take risks and develop their craft. The mission of the New Skid Road Theatre is to make that risk and experimentation possible again.
